Debate Exercises in Every Class

Debates encourage students to engage deeply with course material, provide opportunities for oral communication practice, and allow different viewpoints to be explored in a civil fashion–a vital practice under contemporary circumstances. This short workshop will introduce the scholarship on teaching & learning debates, and review how instructors can incorporate debates into their pedagogy.

Jean Goodwin is a professor in the Department of Communication and a member of the Leadership in Public Science cluster. Her research focuses on argumentation theory: how citizens who disagree, perhaps deeply, can nevertheless manage to coordinate productive exchanges of reasons.
